Bargains on the Broadkill, Sun Festival, Paddlefest and Much More on Tap This Weekend Before Labor Day

August 25, 2021

As we near the end of the traditional summer season for yet another year, the area is about to transition into the busiest period on the calendar in terms of local events and festivals.

But while we're still a week away from this year's Jazz Funeral and the following week's kickoff of Fall Festival Season, there are already plenty of festivals and gatherings popping up on the calendar.

This final weekend of August is filled with a wide range of fun events for the whole family. So we're not going to waste any time and instead jump right into the good stuff.

We begin our look at this weekend's events calendar by taking a trip to the shores of the Broadkill River and one of Milton's largest annual festivals.

Bargains on the Broadkill (August 28)

Milton is the place to be this Saturday, August 28, for one of the most popular events of the summer.

The signature event of the Bargains on the Broadkill is the wildly popular Great Duck Race, which fills the river with rubber duckies racing downstream. The owner of the first duck to cross the  finish line receives $500 in cash from the Milton Chamber of Commerce.

Other prizes are also given out for ducks that perform well in the crisp waters of the Broadkill River.

Scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., in Milton Memorial Park, Bargains on the Broadkill also features live entertainment, arts and crafts vendors, plenty of food and refreshment options and a canoe and kayak race organized by Irish Eyes.

Paddlefest (August 28)

Get ready for some fun in the sun this weekend as the popular Paddlefest festivities kick off for another year at Delaware Seashore State Park.

This is the fifth year for the event, which was created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the park but has continued in subsequent years due to high demand and popularity.

The highlight of the event is still the four-mile kayaking excursion, filled with many sights and members of the park staff along the way to help out. Participants launch from Savages Ditch and finish at Tower Road bayside.

Food trucks will be available at the finish line, as well as a shuttle to take paddlers back to their vehicles.

Sun Festival (August 29 - September 5)

A fun week of community events kicks off this Sunday, August 29, when the event formally known as Sundance takes over Rehoboth Beach.

The 2021 Sun Festival features an eclectic selection of events and activities, including live music, sports, dancing, award-winning Broadway performers, online and live auctions and a lot more.

The Sun Festival begins this Sunday, but runs through Labor Day Weekend in the "Nation's Summer Capital." It's organized and overseen by CAMP Rehobth.

Ocean City Jeep Week (August 26-29)

Ocean City Jeep Week is scheduled for this Thursday to Saturday in Maryland’s favorite summertime resort and promises to again be a fun-filled event at the beach for all participants.

Hosted at the Roland E. Powell Convention Center on Coastal Highway, this year’s event is scheduled to run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday to Saturday. There will be no activities at the convention center on Sunday, August 29, but the event will wrap up that day with a final “beach crawl” on the beach.

Other scheduled events and activities include sand courses, convention center activities, a daily beach crawl and much more.
