As we gather with family and friends this 4th of July to celebrate our nation’s independence, it's important to also think about health and safety. Every year, emergency rooms across the country see a spike in visits due to holiday-related accidents, many of which are preventable.
Fireworks Safety
Fireworks are a staple of the holiday, but they also pose serious risks. Sparklers can burn at temperatures above 1,000°F and cause severe burns, especially to children. Leave fireworks to professionals when possible. If using them at home, follow all safety guidelines, keep water nearby, and never allow young children to handle them.
Grill with Care
Foodborne illnesses also tend to rise during the summer months. Make sure all meat is cooked to the appropriate internal temperatures and never leave perishable foods out in the sun for extended periods. Keep hands and surfaces clean and use separate utensils for raw and cooked foods.
Stay Hydrated and Sun Safe
Spending hours outdoors in the heat can lead to dehydration or heat exhaustion. Drink plenty of water, wear sunscreen, and take breaks in the shade when needed. If you're drinking alcohol, pace yourself and alternate with water.
Know the Signs of Heat Illness
Watch for symptoms like dizziness, nausea, heavy sweating, or confusion. These could be signs of heat exhaustion or even heat stroke, which is a medical emergency.
Enjoy the 4th of July but take a few simple precautions to keep it healthy and safe for everyone.
Happy Independence Day!
