This Weekend's Big Events Being Threatened by Hurricane Florence

UPDATE: As of Friday morning, Sept. 14, all events featured below are still planned to go on as scheduled, with the exception of the Arts & Jazz Festival at the Freeman Stage. That event has been cancelled and will not be rescheduled for 2018.

Hello everyone and welcome to our "Weekender Blog" segment for the third weekend of September.

We have several great events planned for this weekend, and we're going to tell you all about them in just a moment - but with one huge caveat.

With Hurricane Florence bearing down on the east coast of the United States, there's a good chance that some or all of these events could be cancelled, or at least postponed. So if the weather is questionable, which we expect it will be this weekend, please check online ahead of time before heading out to any of the gatherings we'll be discussing below.

For now, we're going to go ahead with this weekend's plans as if they'll be held as scheduled. But at this point, nothing is certain for the weekend of Sept. 14-16.

There are some great annual festivals planned for the next few days, so let's hope the weather forecasts aren't as bad as predicted and that these events will actually happen.

Now, with all that said, here are our featured events for the weekend of Sept. 14-16 in the coastal region:

Festival Hispano (September 16). This fun annual festival celebrates the Hispanic culture, which has been the fastest growing demographic in southern Delaware for many years now.

This annual event is held in the Sussex County Seat of Georgetown and includes great music, folk dances, lots of delicious Hispanic food and a special area reserved for children.

Now held on Race Street in downtown Georgetown, after several years at the Millsboro Little League complex, Festival Hispano has become one of the highlights of the fall and is one you surely don’t want to miss.

The event is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., on Sunday, September 16. For more information on the 2018 Festival Hispano, call 302-854-9262.

Freeman Stage Arts & Jazz Festival (September 15). Once again this summer, quality entertainment has been featured at the local gem that is the Freeman Stage, near Fenwick Island. But this Saturday will be one of the best of the year, with several talented jazz artists scheduled to perform.

While enjoying the music, you can also stroll the grounds and preview the artwork of many of the Delmarva Peninsula's finest artists.

This event begins at 10 a.m. and is free to attend. For more information, visit www.freemanstage.org.

Chautauqua Tent Show (September 13-15). Due to the impending hurricane, all events for the 2018 Chautauqua Tent Show have been moved to the Margaret H. Rollins Community Center, located at 101 Adams Avenue in Lewes.

Events will no longer be held at the Lewes Historical Society Complex, the Zwaanendael Museum or at the Lewes History Museum.

This 20th annual festival, modeled after the popular ones that have taken place in upstate New York for decades, is planned for Sept. 13-15 in Historic Lewes.

While these events are held throughout the country, the version in Lewes features re-enactors who take on the personas of historical figures and educate their audiences on many different moments and events that took place through the years.

The 2018 event will focus on "Delaware and the Railroad."
