‘Addams Family’ to creep into Rehoboth April 12-14

April 8, 2019

Clear Space Theatre’s Spotlight on Young Performers troupe will present “The Addams Family,” Friday to Sunday, April 12 to 14. Performances are at 7 p.m., Friday; 3 and 7 p.m., Saturday, and 3 p.m., Sunday.

The show is a tale of star-crossed young love. Played by Julia Sturla, daughter Wednesday, all grown up, has fallen in love with (gasp!) a perfectly respectable, sweet young man. As he and his parents visit the Addams family home for an ill-fated getting-to-know-you dinner, chaos ensues.

Sturla said, “I love playing Wednesday! She is so funny, even when she’s not trying to be. One of the songs I sing is ‘Pulled’ – it’s my favorite song of the show. Throughout the whole song, Wednesday is discovering so many emotions that are all foreign to her, so she is responding by acting the complete opposite of her normal depressing self. It always gives me a laugh!”

Sturla said of her time with the Young Performers program, “It all started with an elementary school field trip to Clear Space to see ‘Scrooge.’”

Her parents Laura and Rob Sturla agreed. Laura said, “The kids on the field trip received a flyer about acting classes, and after we investigated it further, we signed Julia up for class and she auditioned for her first show, ‘Xanadu.’ From that moment on, Julia became an actor, a singer and a dancer.”

Several years of participating in Clear Space’s Broadway Bound, summer intensives and Spotlight on Young Performers classes followed. Sturla said, “The biggest benefit of all those classes is the people. The Clear Space instructors are so kind and supportive – but they also push me to my limits. Clear Space is a place where you can express yourself without judgment and love what you do. I’ve improved as a person as a result of my experiences with my friends at Clear Space - I’m grateful to call them my Clear Space family.”

Laura Sturla said, “The Clear Space teachers, staff, actors and musical director invest so much time and energy into bringing out the best in these young performers. The summer performers are wonderful mentors who encourage the growth and spirit of the young actors, becoming dear friends in the theatre family. Clear Space provides an environment that fosters and celebrates creativity and enjoying the moment. We feel so blessed to have found and become part of the Clear Space family!”

Rob Sturla said, “We are so proud of Julia – as an actor and as a positive, confident young woman. But more than that, we are so happy that she has this positive environment in which to learn, grow and love her life.”

Tickets for all shows are $17. For more information, go to www.clearspacetheatre.org or call 302-227-2270.
