‘Joy of Oysters’ author to appear at Lewes library June 7

June 2, 2023

The Lewes Public Library’s Cooks & Books program will welcome expert food writer Nils Bernstein for a discussion and book signing of “The Joy of Oysters: A Complete Guide to Sourcing, Shucking, Grilling, Broiling and Frying” at 6 p.m., Wednesday, June 7, at the library’s fireplace area, 111 Adams Ave., Lewes. The event is co-sponsored by Edible Delmarva and Browseabout Books.

Bernstein’s new volume celebrates the joy of eating and cooking with oysters. He offers a smorgasbord of information, recipes, tips, stories, history and everything else the oyster lover — and the oyster curious — could want to know. Readers will learn how to select the freshest, tastiest oysters, and how to store, clean, shuck and serve.

Registration is required at tinyurl.com/zoomwithauthors or lewes.lib.de.us.

Bernstein is the food editor for Wine Enthusiast magazine, and has written and developed recipes for such publications as Bon Appétit, Epicurious, GQ, New York Times, Cooking Light and Men’s Journal. He traded an illustrious career in the music industry, running the publicity departments at independent record labels Sub Pop and Matador, for a career in food, drink and travel journalism. He is the coauthor of “The Outdoor Kitchen” along with Eric Werner, and “Made in Mexico” with Danny Mena. Bernstein splits his time among Mexico City, the Yucatan Peninsula and New York City.

The event follows a meet-and-greet greet happy hour with Bernstein from 3 to 5 p.m., Wednesday, June 7, at Henlopen City Oyster House, 50 Wilmington Ave., Rehoboth Beach.
