185 people from 15 states participating in Coronavirus 6-Pack Racing Series

April 10, 2020

The Coronavirus 6-Pack Racing Series began April 1 and in just over a week has raised nearly $7,000 for 10 nonprofit charities. The series is hosted by the local Seashore Striders and currently has 185 participants from 15 different states.

The states represented are Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Colorado, Kansas, Indiana, Florida, North Carolina, Washington, Connecticut, Montana and Ohio.

Runners and walkers are taking part every day, and many are using treadmills to remain safer in their own homes. Nearly everyone I have spoken to is completing the series by themselves, as they are encouraged not to run in groups. Distances that must be completed during the month of April are the following: 1 mile, 3.1 miles, 5 miles, 6.2 miles, 10 miles, 13.1 miles. The order of the races is totally up to the participant, as some are going in order and some are mixing it up.

The distances can also be done as many times as they wish. Some are racing at 7,000 feet altitude and some are looking for downhill courses with the wind at their back. Regardless of how and when they complete the series, the idea behind the series was to keep moving with a positive activity and to stay strong mentally and physically.

One of the requirements of the series is to donate to one of the 10 charities that were chosen. So far, the Beebe Coronavirus Relief Fund has raised just about $2,000.

Ultramarathon runner LuAnn Goldfarb of Rehoboth Beach, who is a nurse on the front lines and not sure when her next day off is, decided to complete the series all in one day, totaling 38.44 miles. Another impressive set of results came in this week as three runners ran their 1-mile races in under 5:06 led by Georgetown’s Francisco Puac in 4:50.

Runner Tim Young is doing the scoring for the series, which will be posted each week at www.seashorestriders.com, with nightly updates and photos on the Seashore Striders Facebook page. For more information or to get registered, go to www.seashorestriders.com and join the series.
