A good turnout with some good people took off last Saturday morning from the Georgetown Fire Station as the 2nd Kim Miller 5K Boobs & Brew Charity Event hosted by 16 Mile Brewing Company attracted just over 200 runners and walkers.
Host 16 Mile Brewery raised money for the worthy cause. Great times, great food and great beer all came together for a great local charity, the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition.
Dylan Smiley of Phoenixville, Pa., just 16 years old, ran 16:48 to easily win the race on the male side, while Krystal Wright of Seaford ran 22:11 to win the female side of the race.
Steven Eshelman, 21, of Lincoln ran 17:51 for second, while Martin Rodriguez of Selbyville ran 18:13 for third overall. E. Jordan, 59, of Parsonsburg, Md., won the masters in 19:07.
Mardiny Ung of Elizabethtown, Pa., ran 22:48 to finish second overall and grab the masters title, while Deb Helzel of Lewes ran 23:41 for third overall.
Tom Jermyn of Newark won the 50-59 age group and has been racing with the Striders for more than 20 years now winning several of the early April Fools' Day runs at Cape Henlopen State Park. Christina Hopkins of Lewes is now 34 years old and finished second in the 30-39 age group in 25:24 and made sure to remind me that I was her track coach about 18 years ago. Bryan Miller, just 12 years old and the son of Kim Miller, won the 10-13 age group and wore the number “1” in the event. Results can be found at www.seashorestriders.com.
Oy Vey 5K
For one of the best food spreads in the area, more than 100 runners and walkers enjoyed a great scenic course on the Junction & Breakwater Trail at Sunday’s third Oy Vey 5K Run and Walk. Cape’s Joel Simon and his team did a great job putting together plenty of volunteers and plenty of different kinds of kugel for the participants to enjoy after the race. “Runners look forward to Joel’s race and all the great food and friendship at the event,” said Strider Derek Shockro.
Martin Rodriguez ran 18:04 to capture the title, while Chris Stanley was second in 19:29. Bennett Sweren was third in 19:43, while Frank Cannon dipped under the 20-minute barrier in 19:58 for fourth overall.
Tricia Gilson won the female title in 22:15, while Mardiny Ung ran 22:47 for second. Young Lindsey Guida, a distance runner on the Beacon Middle School track team and daily supplier of healthy snacks to her coaches, was third in 24:00. Proceeds benefited the educational programs at Seaside Jewish Community.
Track & field
The Vikings are going back to back this week thanks to the weather, and the Beacon and Mariner teams have not raced since the first of the month. The Cape girls beat Sussex Tech and Milford Wednesday, while the Cape boys lost to both Sussex Tech and Milford in overall scoring action. Former Cape coach Charlie Pollard is the coach at Milford this year. Cape heads to Polytech Thursday for more dual-meet action.
The Beacon and Mariner teams will head into this Friday and the Jim Blades Invitational with only one meet under their belts, not knowing what to expect. The Beacon girls have won the meet for the past two years, and last year the boys were second overall. “We do not know what to expect, and with the weather this spring taking a toll on us, most teams are eager to get to racing,” said assistant coach Gilbert Maull. “We are going into the meet with the best lineup we can put in the meet, and we will hope for the best. The one thing I do know is that our kids are tough competitors.”
