25th annual Running of the Bull takes over Dewey

$15,000 raised for Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company

Revelers celebrated the 25th annual Running of the Bull at The Starboard in Dewey Beach, which culminated in the besting of the beast by ESPN SportsCenter commentator “Stanford” Steve Coughlin.

A parody of the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain, the event kicked off at 10:30 a.m. for the children’s run with the bull on the beach.

Festivities continued at The Starboard, where Kristen and the Noise took the stage, and runners prepared for the race by hydrating with champagne, crushes and a lot of water.

About 2 p.m., hundreds of runners decked in signature colors red and white crossed the highway to the beach for the big run, where they were cheered on by beachgoers.

The crowd returned to The Starboard for the main event - the bullfight with Coughlin hamming it up as matador.

The fun-spirited event was launched by Michael McDonnell 25 years ago, when he and a beach house full of friends decided to enact their own wacky version of Spain’s Running of the Bulls.

The event is an annual fundraiser for the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company. The Starboard owner Steve “Monty” Montgomery said $15,000 was raised for the department.
