The Knights of Columbus Star of the Sea Council 7297, in affiliation with St. Edmond Roman Catholic Church in Rehoboth Beach, is conducting a food drive for Casa San Francisco, Cape Henlopen Food Basket, the Community Resource Center food rescue program and Jusst Sooup Ministries. Each month, these four local pantries provide more than 51,000 pounds of food to those in need.
Families and individuals are asked to donate just one can of food each day of Lent, for a total of 40 cans of food. If at least 1,000 families participate, more than 40,000 pounds of food would be gathered. The pantries request donations from a list of items; the most important needs are soups, oatmeal, macaroni and cheese, cereal, crackers, pancake mix, peanut butter and jelly, canned tuna and nonperishable meals.
Beginning Ash Wednesday, March 6, food items may be dropped off every day during mass hours of 8:15 to 9 a.m., Monday to Saturday; 3:30 to 5 p.m., Saturday; 7 a.m. to noon and 4:15 to 5:30 p.m., Sunday, at St. Edmond Roman Catholic Church, 401 King Charles Ave., Rehoboth Beach.
Food will be distributed to the pantries once each week. The final collection day for all items will be Easter Sunday, April 21.
