AARP 5340 reports service hours

February 5, 2019

In 2018, 14 dedicated members of the local AARP Chapter 5340 recorded a total of 1,709 hours of service to the community.  While most of the 106 members did not report hours, they were very active in working in the community. This is a very active chapter, and members enjoy their monthly meetings. The motto of AARP is to serve, not to be served.

Many projects took place in the Georgetown and Millsboro areas, where most of the members live, as well as other surrounding communities.

One project collects food for Wesley United Methodist Church in Georgetown. It is estimated that members donate more than 30 pounds per month to this pantry.

Other project areas include Delmarva Adult Teen Challenge, where members provide snacks and toiletries. Members also donate gently used household and clothing items to the thrift store.

With more than 75 service hours reported, members spend many hours working to bring cheer to the members of the local Harrison House Nursing Home each month by playing bingo with the residents. At Christmastime, 25 bags were given to the Tunnell Cancer Center for patients undergoing chemotherapy.

To attend a meeting, held at the Sussex Association of Realtors facility on Park Avenue east of Georgetown, contact Anita Wright at 302-856-6215. For more information on the chapter, contact President Paula Norman at 302-560-1768.
