ACLU president to speak at Lewes library Oct. 7

October 2, 2025

The Lewes Public Library and ACLU Delaware will welcome legal scholar and ACLU President Deborah N. Archer for a conversation about her new book, “Dividing Lines: How Transportation Infrastructure Reinforces Racial Inequality,” at 12 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 7, at the library, 111 Adams Ave., Lewes, and online via Zoom.

As the nation’s roads, highways and commuter train systems crumble, Archer argues that communities must consider the role race has played in transportation infrastructure before it is possible to think about rebuilding and repairing. Her work is an essential account of how transportation infrastructure — from highways and roads to sidewalks and buses — became a means of protecting segregation and inequality after the fall of Jim Crow.

“The inequity of transportation bleeds into so many other civil rights issues, from accessing reproductive healthcare to voting in local and national elections,” said Mike Brickner, ACLU-DE executive director. “We're grateful for Deborah Archer's work in this area and glad to have more Delawareans taking part in this important dialogue.”

Archer is a tenured professor and associate dean at New York University School of Law as well as the faculty director of the Community Equity Initiative at NYU Law.

She will be in conversation with Ronald Collins, a legal scholar and Lewes Public Library distinguished lecturer.

Seating is limited, and registration is required. At registration, participants will be asked to select in-person or online attendance. To register, go to tinyurl.com/AuthorEventsLPL or call 302-645-2733.
