Ag Safety Conference set March 7 in Harrington, seeks sponsors

An inaugural Delaware Ag Safety Conference will be held 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 7, in  in the Ag Commodities Building on the State Fairgrounds in Harrington. Delaware Farm Bureau's Promotion and Education Committee, Delaware Department of Agriculture, The Grange, and University of Delaware Extension Office are co-sponsoring. The event is expected to attract 75 to 100 farmers.

Agriculture is one of the most hazardous industries in the U.S., and this event, part of the farm bureau’s Ag Safety campaign, will encourage farmers to "think safety first."

Marty Tatman, ‎director of program development at American Farm Bureau Federation, and Delaware's new Secretary of Agriculture Michael Scuse, have been invited to speak. Topics covered will include Equipment Handling and Mechanical Safety, presented by Dr. James Glancey, University of Delaware; Grain Bin Safety by Margie Chase, Nationwide Insurance; Digital Signage, how DelDOT helps keep farmers safe on the highway; and Pesticide Handling Safety by Ron Jester, retired University of Delaware Extension Safety Specialist. 

MyEyeDr will offer free vision screening. Delaware Department of Health and Social Services will offer information on its Protect Your Skin Delaware program, and chronic disease prevention and control. Delaware Farm Bureau is looking for sponsors to help cover the costs of the conference, which is offered at no charge and will include a complimentary lunch.
