All Vikings play as Cape shoots down Ravens 60-37
Halfway through their divisional schedule, the Cape girls’ basketball team remains undefeated in the Henlopen North after dispatching Sussex Tech 60-37 Jan. 20.
Amalia Fruchtman led the charge with 20 points, while her senior classmate Jurnee White finished with nine points, including a buzzer-beater to end the first half and give the Vikings a 36-13 lead at the break.
White is one of a few girls on the team who may not start, but always contributes when her number is called.
“I was taught at an early age to be ready, so you don't have to get ready,” White said.
Before she beat the clock, she took a knock, making the make all the more impressive.
“I got hit in the chin, and they called a travel on me,” she said. “I was, like, ‘Alright, just keep calm and play defense; the ball's gonna come to you sooner or later.’ And I got the ball to score the three.”
With the big lead, coach Ron Dukes emptied his talented and positively animated bench. But the Ravens wouldn’t go down without a fight.
“Everybody got playing time, [but] I’m a little disappointed on how we played in the second half,” Dukes said. “All of them, starters and some of the bench players, there were spurts where we looked good, and then there were spurts that we just weren’t doing our job.”
Junior Leah Basar led Sussex Tech with 16 points, while Anyah Bailey tallied 12, going 5-for-5 at the free-throw line.
Cape’s 60-37 victory moves the girls to 9-2 overall and 7-0 in the division.
“That's win No. 7 in the North, so seven to go,” Dukes said. “Our focus is to go undefeated in the North, so we're halfway there.”
Cape battled Polytech at home Jan. 22 after the Cape Gazette deadline.
