The Cape girls’ basketball team scored the first 18 points of the game and cruised to a 57-33 win over visiting Appoquinimink Jan. 31 in Lewes. The Vikings are 11-2, while the Jags move to 7-5.
Senior Amalia Fruchtman led the way with 23 points. Junior Ally Diehl added 12, including two from behind the three-point arc.
The Vikings jumped out to an 18-3 first-quarter lead. A crushing press made it hard for the Jags to get their teeth into the ball. The Vikings slowed a bit in the second, entering the halftime locker room up 25-9.
“We did a good job today, and I was happy how I played in the game,” said freshman Natalie Horsey. “We went into a lull in the second quarter, but we talked about it in the locker room and said to keep the foot on the pedal. We came out and kept the energy up.”
Cape coaches liberally substituted in the second half, finishing the game with a 24-point victory.
“We have to play better than we played today,” said Cape coach Ron Dukes. “We have to clean some things up if we want to keep our intensity level high. To play basketball and win the game, you have three things to do – box out, play defense and protect the ball. We didn’t do two of those things today. “
“The first quarter we were on fire,” said junior forward Harper Mamele. “We were slow in the second quarter, and our coaches said to come out with intensity after halftime. We need to have the same intensity all of the time.”
Sophomore Sophia Ramos led the Jags with 14 points.
