American flag should be allowed on Rehoboth Beach

July 19, 2022

My family and I have been vacationing in Rehoboth for more than 25 years. Our beach setup has always included a 15-foot flagpole displaying a 3-by-5-foot American flag. On July 14, I was informed by Rehoboth Beach Police that it was illegal to display the flag on a flagpole at the beach. I am very disappointed by their interpretation of an ordinance that seems to have been written so that tents and other obstructive, temporary structures would not be a nuisance to other beachgoers. Their claim that a 15-square-foot flag is an obstruction while umbrellas with an 8-foot diameter (50 square feet) are allowed seems contradictory.
