American Legion Post 28 baseball team hoping for midseason surge
Nearly halfway through its second season back in action, the American Legion Post 28 baseball team has attracted some high-end talent to its roster and is enjoying the 2025 season.
“I think legion ball is awesome; it’s an amazing way to get out here and have fun and play the game I personally love,” said Jacob Smith, a recent Cape grad. “It's cool because you can always get out of your comfort zone when you're here; I haven't played third base in three to four years, and today I got to swing, hit a double, played third every inning, and I think it was awesome. Every kid should want to do this.”
Post 28 lost to Stahl Post 30 in six innings 18-8 June 30 to move to 2-4, but the boys flashed some ability before the visitors ran away with the game.
Stahl Post 30 was up 3-0 before Post 28 scored its first run when Chet Furmanek barreled toward home on a passed ball in the bottom of the second inning. Stahl Post 30 put up four more in the third inning to seemingly take a commanding 7-1 lead.
However, the hosts would not go down that easy, as Malachi Woods kicked off a six-run inning with an RBI single. Furmanek drove in Ethan Carney, who had advanced to third on Woods’ single. Derrick Sachs, who was flying all over the place in center field, singled to score Woods, making it 7-4 with the bases loaded. Smith, usually a pitcher, demonstrated a little pop when he blasted one to the wall with two outs, clearing the bases with a double to tie the game at 7-7.
Post 30 tacked on three more runs in the top of the fourth, but Post 28 could only respond with a single run, this time coming on Woods’ double that plated Carney. Six more runs in the fifth and another in the sixth spelled doom for the home team, which could not get within 10 during the bottom of the sixth, leading to an early ending and an 18-8 victory for Post 30.
Despite the loss, there are a few positives going for Post 28 in 2025. In the June 30 game, Woods led the team with three hits and had two RBIs, trailing only Smith, who led the team with three. Earlier in June, Smith fanned 12 batters while surrendering only two hits and two runs in the team’s 8-2 win over Smyrna Post 14.
At 2-4, the lads have eight games to go, and will finish a suspended 3-3 game against Walter Fox Post 2 when they host them Wednesday, July 9. In addition to the hybrid twin bill, Post 28 plays at home Monday, July 14, against DelVets. All games are played in Georgetown at Sports at the Beach and are free to attend.
