American Legion Riders deliver gift bags to veterans

December 3, 2021

For years, members of American Legion Riders Post 8 in Georgetown have taken care of area veterans.

Before COVID-19, they would ride their motorcycles to nursing homes, visit with the veterans and watch them open their gift bags.

While ongoing pandemic restrictions mean they are still not allowed into nursing homes, Riders have been able to give veterans gift bags and show respect for their service. Deliveries were made to a total of 45 veterans at Atlantic Shores, Cadia Renaissance, Delmar and Harrison House nursing homes. There were 27 Army members, four Navy, four Air Force, five Marines, four Coast Guard and one National Guard member.

Riders came up with thoughtful gifts for the veterans, with each gift bag including a plush hotel robe, a flannel loungewear set, extra loungewear pants, body wash, 2021 calendar and nine snacks. Snack offerings comprised cheese balls, cotton candy, brownies, potato chips, cheese crackers, cookies, Teddy Grahams, muffins, applesauce, Jell-O, pudding and more. Recipients’ dietary restrictions were taken into account. Each received a card with their branch of service on the front, the Riders’ logo on the inside and Happy Veterans Day wishes from the American Legion Riders Chapter 8.

The Riders who participated in purchasing, packaging and distributing these items were Betty Keczely, Joanne Keczely, Peggy Parkinson and Suzanne Williams.
