Anna Elizabeth Shaffer, enjoyed life
Anna Elizabeth Shaffer, 100, of Lewes, passed away Sunday, March 12, 2023. She was born in Hyndman, Pa., daughter of the late Albert and Estella Mason, and it was there, in 1940, that she married her husband, Victor. Soon after, they made Lewes their home.
Anna enjoyed life and loved to travel. A trip to California and Hawaii at 88 was one of her favorites. She and Victor had a large garden, so Anna canned and froze and gave away lots of vegetables. She also enjoyed crocheting and quilting, among other things. Mostly though, Anna loved being with family. She was a great cook and baker, and served many big meals for her family and friends. At Christmastime, Anna baked hundreds of cookies, everyone’s favorite, but rarely ate one herself. During the Easter season, her family looked forward to her famous bunny cakes and peanut butter eggs.
Anna’s life exemplified her Christian faith, and she taught children Sunday school classes for many years. If you were a neighbor in need, she was there to run errands, do laundry, or just sit and keep you company. Later in life, when she needed help, she was so grateful for those who cooked and cleaned for her. Always smiling and never complaining, Anna was a joy to be around, whether you knew her as Mom, Mammaw, Aunt Ann, Mrs. Shaffer, Miss Ann, Anna, or even Anna Banana. She will be missed.
In addition to her parents, Anna was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years Victor Shaffer in 2002; and her eldest daughter Janet Maull in 2018. She is survived by her daughters, Suzette Hurst (David) and Sharon Shepherd (Ricky); her son-in-law, Bailey Maull; her grandchildren, Bailey Maull IV, Mark Maull, Matthew Hurst, Christopher Hurst, Jonathan Hurst, Karen West and Marc Anderson, and their spouses; and her 18 great-grandchildren.
A small graveside service was held March 16, at Henlopen Memorial Park in Milton.
Arrangements were entrusted to Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Eagle’s Nest Fellowship Church, 26633 Zion Church Road, Milton, DE 19968; or Delmarva Christian High School, 21777 Sussex Pines Road, Georgetown, DE 19947.
