Aretha Franklin documentary to open at Cinema Art Theater April 19

April 18, 2019

“Amazing Grace,” a remarkable documentary featuring never-before-seen footage of the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin, will open at the Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater Friday, April 19.

In January 1972, a film crew captured Aretha Franklin’s live recording of the album “Amazing Grace” at The New Bethel Baptist Church in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles. Stuck in legal and technical limbo for almost 50 years, “Amazing Grace” was never released and thought lost to history. Through the exhaustive efforts of a record executive named Alan Elliot to restore the film and fight for it to see the light of day, audiences now have the privilege of witnessing Aretha Franklin at the height of her powers.

Screening times are 2 and 6 p.m., Friday, April 19; 3 and 6 p.m., Saturday, April 20; 2 p.m., Monday, April 22; 4 and 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 23; 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 24; and 3 and 6 p.m., Thursday, April 25.

Admission is $8 for members and $11 for nonmembers. Customers are encouraged to purchase tickets online. If seats are available, tickets can be purchased at the theater starting 30 minutes prior to each screening.
