Research indicates that aromatherapy aids in the relief of anxiety and depression, improves sleep and increases quality of life, especially for people who are living with chronic health conditions. Smaller studies indicate that lavender reduces pain in osteoarthritis patients and improves quality of life for people with dementia. People who utilize lavender in their aromatherapy practice also report feeling more relaxed and achieving healthy sleep patterns.

Essential oils used in aromatherapy are drawn from plants and distilled to create concentrated extracts. Individuals often use essential oils through inhalation, direct application and diffusion. Aromatherapy works by activating smell receptors in the nose that send messages to the body’s limbic system through the nervous system. The limbic system is the part of the brain that controls emotions. This mind-body connection can have a profound impact not only on one’s mental health but also physical health.

Aromatherapy with essential oils can also be used to help clear the mind to focus on the present moment and practice mindfulness. Mindfulness promotes well-being by reducing stress, easing anxiety, and decreasing rumination and emotional reactivity responses.
