Volunteers began the final stage of the Lewes drawbridge mosaic mural project Nov. 4.
Two 25-foot-long sections of mural panels, with each panel measuring 5 feet long and 2 feet high, were screwed into the west side of the bridge. Then, under perfect weather conditions, volunteers worked to blend the panels together to hide the seams and screws.
Two more 25-foot sections will be placed on the east side of the bridge for a total of 100 feet.
Led by mosaic artist Lorelei Meanor, a team of more than 50 volunteers worked over 1,000 hours to complete the 20 panels.
Art in Bloom, a Lewes in Bloom committee, oversaw the project headed by manager Sue Sandmeyer.
Once installation is completed, an outdoor reception will take place to commemorate the mural and those who contributed to it.
The creation of the mural started in January but had to be stopped in March due to COVID-19. After guidelines about best practices for groups to work together and remain safe were adopted, the mural work continued outside from July through September.
Donations for the mosaic mural can still be made online at lewesinbloom.org/art-in-bloom-donations, or by mailing a check to: Art in Bloom, PO Box 61, Lewes, DE 19958.
