The votes are in and the judges have spoken in this winter’s five-week Kingpin Karaoke contest at Lefty’s Alley & Eats, and the winner is Ashley Miller from Greenwood.
Miller won over the crowd and the judges by flawlessly singing “Open Arms” by Journey and “You and I” by Lady Gaga. As the winner of this year’s contest, Miller will receive a week-long Caribbean cruise for two, courtesy of Oasis Travel in Ocean City, Md.
Miller, a real estate paralegal, has been a music enthusiast and amateur songwriter since age 12, when her father taught her how to play guitar. Since then, she has always enjoyed music with friends and singing to her cat, but has never entered a competition. “This contest really got me out of my comfort zone and was so much harder than I imagined it would be. I’m not sure if I’m happier that I won or that I experienced so much personal growth getting up there on stage. It was a real confidence boost,” said Miller.
When asked about her favorite artist, Miller says without hesitation it’s Lady Gaga. “I love what she stands for as a person and an artist. Not only does she have a world-class voice, she is a world-class person and relatable on so many levels. She is so inspiring,” Miller said. While Lady Gaga is her favorite artist, the song “Open Arms” has a deep personal connection to Miller, as her husband is currently deployed overseas with the Air Force.
Non-competitive karaoke will resume at 7 p.m. Thursdays beginning May 30. For more information, go to www.iloveleftys.com.
