Athletes of the Week April 19

April 19, 2019
Lily Ashby

A midfielder/forward for the Cape varsity soccer team, this freshman powered a 35-yard score to boost the Vikings to their first win over Indian River since the 2013 season. "Lily's a pistol," said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. "She's hard to beat and doesn't use the freshman card as an excuse. She has a bright future in the Cape soccer program." An honor roll student at Cape, Lily also plays left-mid for the JV hockey team, where she scored five goals and assisted on 18 in the fall. She also plays for the Delaware Shore Field Hockey team and the Coastal Atlantic Futbol Club, where she plays tournaments throughout the year for her coach/dad Jay. Her brother Jack was an all-state player for the Vikings and now plays for the University of Lynchburg.

Jack Dennis

A 6-foot-6 Cape midfielder wearing No. 13 with long hair flying out the back of his aerodynamic lacrosse helmet, Dennis can run and play D and score from anywhere on the field. He is a nightmare, and you’re just glad he’s on your team. Dennis had a hat trick April 12 in the 12-8 win over Salesianum, including ripping a late shot to increase the lead to 11-9 with two minutes left to play. “That was the greatest game with an unbelievable atmosphere – so many people cheering – and we played so well. It was all just great,” Dennis said. He came back against Tower Hill April 15 and cranked home four goals in the first period as Cape prevailed 18-3. Next season, he’ll be playing for the Salisbury University Seagulls.

Sydney Doel

She’s a sophomore who describes herself as a utility player on Cape’s softball team. Sydney takes all honors classes and lives at home with her parents, a brother, and two horses. Sydney admits to being a good old Sussex County girl. Last week when the going got tough in a pair of must-win games, Sydney showed up. She was 2-for-2 April 9 versus Sussex Central. Both hits were doubles, and she knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Cape won 14-13. She came back two days later at Delmarva Christian and went 4-for-5, including a double and a triple as Cape won 12-6. “Our goal is to make the state tournament,” Sydney said. “We are playing so much better.”

Destiny Bailey-Perkins

Destiny is a Caesar Rodney sprinter and jumper who’s a stellar student and all-around great kid, according to coach Mike Tucci. She is in the National Honor Society and sports a 93 GPA. She was girls’ indoor track and field state athlete of the year after winning state titles in 55 meters, long jump and triple jump. Destiny is on her way to Campbell College on a full scholarship for academics/athletics. On April 16 versus Cape, she won the 100 meters in 12.2; 200 meters in 25.4, long jump at 18-feet-6-inches and triple jump at 36-feet-7-inches. Destiny is defending outdoor state champion in the long jump. Next week, she’ll be competing in her third Championship of America Penn Relays long jump.
