Athletes of the Week Sept. 3

September 3, 2021
Ryan Betins

A junior starting right tackle for the Cape football team, Ryan plays shoulder-to-shoulder with right guard Lucas Ruppert, providing Cape with 600 pounds of momentum for a running  back to get up behind in short-yardage situations. Ryan is the son of muppet “Lumpy,” also known as Mike Betins. “Betins has worked hard and made himself into a great offensive lineman,” said Cape coach J.D. Maull. Playing right tackle on the power side of the offense, Betins has next-level potential. He’s a good student with a great attitude.

Mackinzie Brown

Mack was shut down her sophomore season of field hockey for six weeks plus another two weeks on a rehab comeback after a stress fracture of the L5 vertebrae in her lumbar region. Last spring, she played on the state championship lacrosse team. The first day of the 2021 hockey season, she ran her two miles in 14:40, a full minute faster than last year. “I worked hard with weight training at OutTrain Fitness in Harbeson,” she said. Although she was listed as a defender on the roster during preseason play days, she could be found all over the place. She is a projected starter somewhere from midfield to the back. Mack takes all honors and Advanced Placement courses, and goes to Academic Challenge. “On the field, her speed has now caught up with her skill,” said coach Kate Austin. “With her skill level, great shot, and vision on the field, she’s going to be a threat this year.”

Trevor Donley

Just 12 years old from Silver Spring, Md., the Sidwell Friends seventh-grader was the first person out of the water at the Aug. 29 Sun Festival 5K and Biathlon. And most importantly, no one ran down his dream of finishing first as he crossed the finish line seven seconds ahead of Jon Tower of Middletown. Trevor’s brother Logan, 10, placed 11th, and his mom Christy placed 13th. “I’ve signed up to run cross country in middle school this fall,” Trevor said. “I have no idea how fast I can run.”

Thomas Gibbs

A junior starting left guard on the Cape football team, Thomas is the son of Tommy Gibbs, the youngest of 17 children of Charlie and Alberta Gibbs. The other branch of his family tree starts with his mom Robin Savage. Ancestry.com is needed to figure out all the cousins, aunts and uncles. Thomas went off last spring scoring goals for the JV lacrosse team, following in the footsteps of Aarin Burton, his cousin who may be his nephew who plays at Bethany College. Thomas has the Cape pedigree; he’s smart with good balance and excellent feet. He has survived preseason and is ready for a 10-game schedule. Then he is looking forward to lacrosse season.
