Athletes of the Week April 24

April 24, 2026
Isabel Betts

A Milford senior attacker who scored 53 goals as a junior has been ringing the bell her senior season, scoring a hat trick in all seven games played, totaling 33 on the season. Izzy is not a gunner, more of a slasher who can finish with either hand. Milford is just 2-4 on the season yet they are athletic and somewhat lacking depth with a sprinkling of super-talented players. Izzy was also a forward/midfielder on the field hockey team. She is heading to Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C., which has 1,600 women in its undergraduate programs. Its sports teams are nicknamed the Avenging Angels. Their lacrosse team at Division III level is currently 14-4. Meredith plays in the USA South Atlantic Conference. Meredith’s field hockey team was 8-9 last fall. Izzy projects as a major prospect/asset to both programs.

Brodie Deas

Brodie is a seventh-grade pitcher/first baseman for the Mariner Middle baseball team. On the mound, Brodie leads the team in innings pitched with 15.1 and strikeouts with 21. Brodie has allowed five hits and eight walks in those innings. In a recent game against Dover Middle, he went 6.2 innings, allowing two hits, two walks, no earned runs, while picking up seven strikeouts. Over the season, he has only allowed two earned runs. “Every pitch he throws moves, and that allows him to keep other team's offenses off balance,” said coach UJ Johnson. “Brodie is a great young man and always smiling. On the mound, he's had the mentality to attack opposing hitters and challenge them with his best pitches. He's the type of kid who never backs down from a challenge and always wants the ball. We are excited to see what Brodie can do for the team over the rest of our season.”

Brandon Jaimes

This junior on the Sussex Academy boys’ lacrosse team has made huge strides in his game over the last couple of years. A tremendous athlete who has won a state championship in soccer and helped his team to another appearance this past fall, Jaimes picked up lacrosse from his brother. He plays close defense for the Seahawks and has had to cover the opposition's best option since Cooper Lawson went down with an injury. He constantly communicates, and his footwork from soccer has now been combined with accurate checks to make being around him very difficult. He is much more confident with his stick as a junior and won't hesitate to lead a transition or get in a tussle for a ground ball. Jaimes is quick to hold himself and other teammates accountable, and can usually get a feel for what an offense is trying to do, forcing the opposition to use different tactics.

Max Selders

A Cape honor roll student on the baseball team, this senior is having an outstanding week for the Vikings. Max went 4-for-4 in the win over Odessa. Two of his hits were made possible by his speed in outrunning the third baseman's throw. He knocked in four RBIs and scored twice himself. His batting average is now .444 with 12 hits and 10 RBIs in 27 at bats. He’s gone 7-for-8 with six RBIs in his last two games. "He’s transitioned from being a catcher to playing first base full time," said coach Ben Evick. "He has worked as hard, if not harder, than anyone on the team this year to improve to stay in the lineup. He’s done a great job bringing energy to our team every day, and he's really fun to be around." Max is a part of Fellowship of Christian Athletes. In his spare time, he likes going to the gym and fishing. After graduation, he will be attending the University of Delaware as a business and finance major. Update: Max hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning April 23, lifting the Vikings to a 15-5 mercy-rule win over Laurel to hand Evick his 275th win as head coach.
