Athletes of the Week April 28

April 28, 2023
Jason Baker

This Cape two-miler, a freshman by way of Mariner Middle, has hit the ground running in his first season of high school track. The converted soccer goalie blazed a personal best 10:12 for the 3,200 meters at the N5CTA Invite April 1 and has broken 10:20 multiple times on the outdoor circuit. He also clocked an eye-opening 16:39 for 5,000 meters at the Seahawk Invite in March. Jason seems well on his way to challenging his older brother Ryan for the title of fastest in the family. “Jason’s definitely goal-oriented and one of the hardest workers at practice, and that’s on a hardworking crew,” said Cape distance coach Matt Lindell. “He’s a competitor who responds well to getting pushed in a race — he doesn’t back down. Beyond that, he has the other intangibles besides being a good athlete. He’s supportive of his teammates, has a good head on his shoulders, and he gets the team concept.”

Will Harrison

A Sussex Central senior track athlete who excels in the zone senior where sprints meet middle distance. Coach Derek Shockro said, “Will  started in our program as a freshman 800m guy, showed speed in the 400 as a sophomore, and we needed a starter for our 4-by-100 due to injury. He stepped in and has been consistently delivering in the 100 to 400 meters. Last season, Will was first team all-state as a junior in the 4-by-100 and an All-American in the 4-by-400 with the AX Track AAU program. He is an AP/Honors kid who plans on majoring in psychology and running in college. He’s dedicated to his sport and is a student of the game; he does a great job paying it forward with our emerging athletes. Will is a huge asset and will be missed.” Will ran a 50.4 in the open 400 meters April 18 to win the tri-meet against Cape and Caesar Rodney.

Brody McMahon

Brody is a 6-foot-6, 185-pound senior long pole defenseman for the Bearcats of St. Vincent's College in western Pennsylvania. He has played and started in all 15 games this season, recording 42 caused turnovers while also scooping up 55 ground balls. He’s scored three goals and assisted on two others. Against Juniata in February, he recorded six ground balls and four caused turnovers. For that effort, he was voted the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week Feb. 27. He also earned the honor Feb. 21. He received the honor a third time April 25 following a career game in St. Vincent’s Senior Day win over Thiel College April 23, when he recorded eight caused turnovers and eight ground balls. The Bearcats are 13-2. Brody graduated from Cape in 2019 and was the Scott Brozey Scholarship recipient.

Ella Rishko

Ella has been going off for the Hokies  of Virginia Tech, including a seven-goal performance against Pitt in the opening round of the ACC tournament and two goals in a 14-12 loss to Syracuse. Ella totaled 44 goals and six assists for the season. Ella is a product of Atlantic Lacrosse and the Eastern Shore Lacrosse Association. She was a three-sport standout at Cape playing field hockey, basketball and lacrosse. Her senior season she was Player  of the Year in lacrosse and first-team all-state in field hockey. She was the starting point guard on the Henlopen Conference Championship basketball team. Mikey was honored as Rookie of the Year playing lacrosse for the Mercer University Bears and is the second leading scorer on the team.
