Athletes of the Week Aug. 23

August 23, 2019
Erin Dunlap

Erin made Milford field hockey history last week by being the first eighth-grader to make the high school varsity team. DIAA is allowing Milford to bring up eighth-graders because they are part of Milford Central Academy. Erin scored two goals in Milford’s play day scrimmage at Cape Aug. 17. She started playing hockey in third grade with Milford Parks and Rec. Last winter, Erin played travel with Oranje. According to coach Andrea Fleming McPike, Erin aspires to be a Division I college hockey player. She is an honors student and a Girl Scout who volunteers with Team Surfgimp. She likes math and is interested in architecture. She enjoys being on the beach and spending time with her friends. Mostly she’s a great early-season sports story, and a great kid.

Allen Jackson

Allen, 51, has heard all the “Don’t Rock the Jukebox” jokes, sharing a name with country singing legend Alan Jackson, who just turned 60. But more people in Milton/Lewes know Allen than Alan; it seems like everyone is his relative. Allen snuck into the Rehoboth Station 86 Fire Fightin’ 5K Aug. 18 representing Station 85 of Milton. He ran in full gear, completing the 5K in 41:47. Allen graduated from Cape in 1986, then went into the Marine Corps for four years. He joined the National Guard in 1997 and retired in 2018. He belongs to a men’s workout group based on fitness of mind and body. “I never smoked or did drugs, and every once in a great while I’ll have a few beers,” Allen said. He has been married twice and has four children. He’s been working for Rogers Sign Co. since 1991. “Been in Sussex County a long time with a big family and lots of kinfolk around,” Allen said.

Davonte Johnson

A Cape football senior who played at 132 pounds his junior year. Everyone calls him DJ. In the scrimmage at Lake Forest Aug. 17, DJ picked off a pass on the first possession. It was an athletic and smart play, as he dove in front of the receiver and jumped the route. Later, on the last play of Cape’s second possession, DJ ran an out-and-up down the sideline and caught a perfect ball from quarterback Hank D’Ambrogi for a touchdown. “DJ has worked on the field this season. Last year he struggled learning the offense, and it’s fun watching him now having all the confidence, and he is helping younger guys learn offense,” said coach J.D. Maull. DJ was raised by his grandfather Charles Johnson. DJ’s mother Tammy Johnson, a Del State graduate, died from lupus at age 26 when DJ was just 9 months old.

Kevin Williams

Kevin is a senior running back, defensive back and special teams player on the Cape football team. He’s blessed with great speed and work ethic. “I coached his uncle Larry Miller back in the day, and all Cape people know what Larry could do,” said Cape coach J.D. Maull. Kevin has hung tough, putting in work and waiting for an opportunity. Last year he played at 140 pounds. “Kevin is silent, just works hard,” Maull said. “We are hoping to keep him healthy and for him to give us speed in the backfield.” Kevin is an old-school-type Cape athlete, and on Friday nights, he’ll have more cousins, uncles and aunts in the stands than a little bit. He is one of only four seniors on the team.
