Athletes of the Week Dec. 14

December 14, 2018
Dania Cannon

Cape coach Pat Woods describes this junior guard as a field general on the court, relying on her to command the team to high-pressure defenses and an explosive offense. She scored nine points in the come-from-behind win at Polytech. "It was Dania's idea to go full-court pressure against Polytech," said Woods. "She controls the pace. If she's on the floor, things are good. We let her run the offense, and she calms everyone down when we need it." A member of the Cape JROTC program, this honor roll student performs volunteer community service in her spare time. She also plays travel ball in the off-season.

Tyre Maull

Tyre started at right guard the last two seasons for the Stevenson University Mustangs, who finished this season 8-3. Tyre has one more season to play. He broke his leg freshman year and took a redshirt. He came back to earn a starting position. Head coach Ed Hottle spoke by phone of his offensive guard: “Great young man. He’s dedicated to the sport and the weight room, and doing a good job in the classroom. Tyre is on schedule to graduate, and I’m sure will go on and do great things in his life. We look forward to having him play for us for one more year.” Tyre went IHOP over the last two seasons, amassing 20 pancake blocks.

Robert Mitchell

Robert just finished his second and final season as an offensive lineman for the Lackawanna College Falcons of Scranton, Pa. Robert is listed at 6-foot-3, 305 pounds, and for those who remember him playing basketball at Cape, Robert has quickness and great feet. “Robert has been a super player for us these past two years. His football IQ is off the charts. He is currently visiting several Division I schools around the country, and he has big decisions as to where he wants to play next. Any college that gets Robert will be very lucky,” said head coach Mark Duda. “Robert never missed a weight room session during his four years in high school, even in the summer,” said former Cape coach Bill Collick. “We are all proud of him, and his success is no surprise.”

Alexis Watkins

An honor roll student at Cape, this senior guard is the only captain on the Vikings' basketball squad, and she’s called upon by coach Pat Woods to do all the dirty work on the hardwood: "Lexi is a lockdown defender and locks on the best player from our opponents. She had three blocks down the stretch against Polytech. She's probably the most consistent player on our team, not just on the floor at a game, but at practice. Lexi is somewhat of a rock for us. She's been fantastic." A straight-A student in the National Honor Society, Lexi is also a member of the AVID program and hopes to attend Drexel University and major in business and communications.
