Athletes of the Week Feb. 27

February 27, 2026
Cale Baker

This Cape senior is a head-to-toe unorthodox wrestler who uses a lot of arms and legs. He performs best in money matches, which coaches call the blood round. Cale, bloodied from battle, recorded his 100th career win in a 11-4 decision over Storm Hoffman of Delmar in the consolation semifinal round of the Henlopen Conference Championships. Cale came back protected by a face mask to win by pin in the third-place match over Drake Rodgers of Sussex Tech. Cale contributed 18 points toward the team victory. Cale is the sixth seed in the upcoming state tournament. He is 27-14 with 18 pins on the year, and now has 101 career wins with 66 pins. “Cale is a great kid who has developed into a competitive wrestler. He works hard, asks questions and strives to always improve,” said coach Chris Mattioni.

Jack Hudson

This freshman 113-pound wrestler has been extraordinary in a competitive weight class that is super tough at the top. Jack finished third in his weight class at the Henlopen Conference wrestling tournament Feb. 21 at Sussex Central. Cape coach Chris Mattioni called his performance a great accomplishment for a freshman. Jack was 4-1 with two pins, one major decision and a decision. He contributed 19 team points, helping Cape win the team title. Jack is 26-13 with eight pins for the season. “He is dedicated; he works hard and never misses practice,” Mattioni said. “He is going to have a great career at Cape.”

Molly Mendes

A redshirt senior for the Rollins College women’s lacrosse team, this former Cape player leads the 3-1 Tars with 15 points – nine goals and six assists. Molly had three goals and three assists in a recent 18-6 win at Lenoir-Rhyne. Molly studied at Aix en Provence in France during the fall semester of her junior year. She will play as a graduate student next year while working on her master’s degree. Molly led the Cape team in points as a senior and totaled over 100 points in her career. A two-time lacrosse state champion and three-time hockey state champion, Molly was also on the swim team. Molly, a National Honor Society student-athlete, was first-team all-state lacrosse while at Cape. Her older brother Austin (Cape football) is a launch operator on the pilot boats with Delaware Bay Launch based at Slaughter Beach.

Carson Tuer

A sophomore wrestling 165 pounds for the Henlopen Conference champion Cape Henlopen Vikings, cool-hand Carson got off the mat twice to record impressive pins on his way to a third-place finish last weekend at Sussex Central High School. Carson pinned Ben Lee of Sussex Central in the quarterfinals at 5:15, and also pinned Theodore Egolf of Delmar 4:13 in the third-place finals. Carson is 25-18 this season with 19 pins. Carson contributed 21.5 team points to the victory. Carson is seed No. 8 in the upcoming state tournament. “He is a funky wrestler who is never out of a match. He was trailing a few times over the weekend and finished with pins,” said coach Chris Mattioni.
