Athletes of the Week Jan. 26

January 26, 2024
Ozmeer Daisey

This Cape freshman has given the Vikings a spark off the bench this season and has made quite a name for himself in the Henlopen Conference with his quick physical play. "Oz brings great energy with him every day," said Cape head coach Steve Re. "When he is focused and using his athletic ability to his full potential, he will continue to get better each year. He came in tonight and gave us the spark we needed to get us the third straight win." He has shared the ball and been a force under the boards, kicking the ball out or taking it hard to the basket. Oz plays football for the Vikings and hopes to run track his spring. In his spare time he likes to hunt, fish and enjoy other outdoor activities.

Jayden Dukes

A junior guard for the Vikings, Jayden has been a consistent player, and a leader on and off the court. He hit for 13 points, snagged two rebounds, dished off two assists and made a steal in the Vikings’ big win over the Caesar Rodney Riders on Tuesday night. "Jayden has turned the corner the last several weeks," said Cape coach Steve Re. "He started off a little slow, but has been able to grind through some struggles. When he is on his game, he is unguardable and brings such a different element to our team. He is a solid student with expectations of playing basketball at the next level, and he loves being in the gym and is always working on his game." When not on the Cape hardwood you can find Jayden honing his skills on the local courts or doing any activity that includes a basketball. He always goes by the rule, "Ball is life."

Kennedy Johnson

“Keke” scored 17 points in Cape’s half-point team victory over Polytech at last week’s Henlopen Conference Championships. She won the long jump with a personal best 17-0, placed sixth in the 400 meters in 1:05.9 to score 3 points, and anchored the 4-by-200 meters and 4-by-400 meters to second-place finishes. The last dramatic 4-by-4 race required Keke to hold off a charging Polytech runner to secure the team championship. Johnson followed that performance at the Bayside Meet Jan. 24 by winning the 400 meters in 1:04.96 and long jump in 16-0. Keke is a senior and a good student. Her college plans are not decided at this time.

Nick Walker

Nick Walker, wrestling at 144/150, is a Cape sophomore and fan favorite because of his attacking style. Nick will likely wrestle at 144 when it comes to the “money meets.” Coach Chris Mattioni said, “Nick is one of our team captains. He really turned the corner this preseason. He is one of the most dedicated and hardest workers on the team. He currently has a record of 24-5 with 10 pins. He placed sixth in SC, won the Governor Mifflin and Panther invitationals. He is reliable and holds everyone on the team accountable. He hates to lose and is willing to outwork his competitors.” Nick is the defending Henlopen Conference champion and placed second in the state as a freshman in the 132-pound weight class.
