Athletes of the Week March 17

March 17, 2023
Austin Guerrieri

This Mariner Middle eighth-grader won the 90-pound Delaware state wrestling championship March 11. Austin won his first two matches by pin, then won the championship match by a 9-0 major decision. He finished up his middle school career undefeated, with two Henlopen Conference titles and two state titles for his school. Austin started wrestling when he was 4 years old and wrestles with the Henlopen Hammers, McDonald Wrestling Academy and at home with his dad. Austin plays lacrosse at Mariner for a secondary sport. He is very excited to start his high school wrestling career next year with the Cape Henlopen Vikings.

Blake Gipko

This 2021 Cape grad has taken his lacrosse skills to Delaware Tech after stints at Wingate University and Appalachian State. He recently scored three goals in the loss to a tough Herkimer College team from upstate New York. He has a total of eight goals and five assists on the season, making him one of the top point leaders for the Del Tech squad. "Blake has really stepped up to be a team leader," said Del Tech coach Sean Tischler. "He's very uplifting to the team. He goes all out all the time and has a real knack to get his teammates to follow him." A sophomore exercise science major, Blake was awarded the Scott Brozey Lead by Example scholarship upon graduation at Cape. "He is the epitome of a former Cape lacrosse player. He goes 110% all of the time and has great lacrosse acumen," said Tischler.

Morgan Schubert

This Cape honor roll senior is in her first year on the soccer team after living in Germany and playing for seven years on the SV Bayer Wuppertal and BV Gräfrath club squads. A former goalie, she has moved to attack, where she has already made an impact on the scoreboard, tallying five goals in five preseason matches. "Morgan is a talented senior," said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. "She is an experienced goalkeeper, but for us she will mostly be playing as an attacking mid. She has a very high soccer IQ and is very savvy around the goal." She also plays on the Shore Football Club team in Easton, Md. Morgan's favorite subjects are AP chemistry and animal science, and she hopes to study them in college where she wants to major in chemistry or pre-vet. When not on the soccer turf, you can find her at the beach with friends and taking walks with her dog Maisie.

Carson Tuer

This 12-year-old wrestler started wrestling in kindergarten and just completed his eighth season. He went 41-8 on the season, including a runner-up finish at the middle school conference tournament and a tournament win in the 134-pound division at the Delaware youth state championships. His finals match was against Kaleeb Tribbett. He fought off a first-period pin attempt and was behind 5-0 before coming back to win 11-6. He likes skimboarding, surfing, fishing and crabbing, and wants to wrestle for Cape Henlopen High, then continue to wrestle in college.
