Athletes of the Week May 13

May 13, 2022
Madison Costello

Senior Madison Costello claimed a silver medal at second doubles with sophomore teammate Sia Patel at the Henlopen Conference Tennis Championships this week, helping Cape to a second-place team finish. This gutsy player posted a 12-2 record her senior season to go with the bronze medal she earned at first doubles with partner Alia Justiniani last year. She finishes her career with a record of 23-5. Madison will be attending Cornell University in the fall, majoring in either chemical or computer engineering. She participates in band, math league, ski club, honor society and Leo Club. Madison also enjoys dancing (ballet, contemporary and acro) at Sussex Dance Academy. “Madison was a huge contributor to our team success over the last two years," said head coach Laurie Carter. "Her focus and calm demeanor were tremendous assets throughout her junior and senior years. Madison’s blue-collar work ethic and intellectual capacity make her someone to watch as she develops into one of our country’s future leaders.”

Gabe Harris

When your dad was the best 800-meter runner in the country in high school, you just follow in his footsteps. Postlethwait eighth-grader Gabe Harris did just that, as the talented middle schooler won three events at the Delaware Middle School Classic held at Cape Henlopen May 10. Harris won the 55-meter hurdles, the 400 meters and the 200 meters, and was not challenged in any of the three events of the night. Harris also plays baseball in the spring, so a spring-sports decision will be in the near future as he heads to high school. Cape track coach Tim Bamforth said Harris is one of the strongest and most talented middle schoolers he has watched in his 42 years of track & field.

Sia Patel

Sophomore Sia Patel burst on the Cape tennis scene by posting a 12-2 record at second doubles with senior partner Madison Costello. Together they garnered a silver medal and four points toward the team total, helping the Vikings finish tied for second place at the conference tournament at Sea Colony. Sia participated in DECA, winning first place at states in marketing management, and recently attended the international conference in Atlanta, Ga. She is a member of the National Honor Society and, prior to joining the tennis team, played for the Premier Volleyball League. “Sia earned her position at second doubles in only her first year with our team," said Cape coach Laurie Carter. "She is extremely coachable, and is the perfect combination of intensity, focus and sportsmanship. Sia is a tremendous addition to our program and a valuable asset to the future of the team.”

Emma Reynolds

Emma plays second base and bats leadoff for the 10U Delaware Express. She is an H.O.B. fifth-grader who earns straight As. The Delaware Express played 11 games over two weekends and won a pair of championships. Emma was a combined 15-for-20 at the plate, scoring 24 runs with 10 RBIs, 13 walks and 30 steals. Emma plans to play field hockey and softball at Mariner during her sixth-grade year. She is the great-granddaughter of Jerry Reynolds, former Cape school board president, and Sandy Reynolds, a former teacher at H.O.B. Jordan Reynolds, Emma’s dad, was an all-conference third baseman for Sussex Tech (2002) and mom Crystal Reynolds (Mallery) was a pitcher and first baseman at Lake Forest (2002). Uncle Chuck Wooleyhand is the Dover varsity softball coach.
