Athletes of the Week May 19

May 19, 2023
Alexa Dougherty

Alexa is a Cape senior track girl who’s unabashed and unafraid to try new events and even new sports. “I came up as a lacrosse player through Atlantic,” Alexa said. “My sophomore season, I decided to do winter/indoor track to stay in shape and found I liked the sport better than lacrosse.” At the Henlopen Conference Championships May 11-12,  Alexa placed second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 48.7 and third in the triple jump at 32-feet-1-inch, ran leadoff on the 4-by-400 relay (4:29) and ran anchor on the 4-by-800 relay (10:44). She is going to the University of Delaware, where she plans to participate in club-level track and field. “I don't think I’m a D1-level track athlete, but I want to keep doing the sport where I can make new friends who are teammates,” Alexa said. Cute as a button, sharp as a tack and tough as nails, Alexa Dougherty is no joke.

Nate Horn

Nate is a rugged inside linebacker with a personality to match. He was Cape’s Sam Russell Award winner for the 2022 football season. Nate, a senior, is an honors and AP student who throws shot put for the track and field team because he likes to test his strength. He is coached by Rob Perciful, who was schooled by the late Bill Degnan, a man who coached multiple conference and state champions. During the winter season in January, Nate won the Pat Russo Invitational at the Worcester County Rec Center with a throw of 41-feet-11-inches. At the outdoor Henlopen Conference Championships last week, Nate became a champion with a throw of 50-feet even. That is insane improvement. There are three Division I guys upstate who have thrown farther. Nate will have to throw 55 feet to win a state title. Unlikely for sure, but not impossible.

Tre Johnson

“Freshman superstar,” said Cape assistant track coach Jay Maull with a smile as Tre stood next to him at Monday's track practice. “This young man is seriously fast.” Tre Johnson is the younger brother of Skylar and Chancellor; he is a sprinter and wrestler, seriously smart and strong. At the Henlopen Conference Championships last week, Tre ran the third leg on the school-record 4-by-100 relay team also featuring Maurki James, Konner Knarr and LT Messick. They ran to a time of 43 seconds flat. Fast times ending in zero are always emphasized as flat! Tre also led off the 4-by-200 relay team that placed eighth in 1:34.32. Tre, a 126-pounder last season on the JV wrestling team, won most of his matches by pin. Tre is closely related (cousin) to the Savage family of Cape that produced five track state champions.

Laurelee Mobius

A senior honor roll student on the Cape soccer team, this defender has the most assists this season from her free kicks. She recently scored a goal on one of her corner kicks at Polytech. “She is a team leader, captain and is absolutely adored by her teammates," said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. "Lo sets high expectations for herself, but more importantly, her teammates. She is a rock and a mainstay in the middle of our defensive third. She’s got a strong mental fortitude coming back from her ACL tear. She has hit the ground running and hasn’t looked back. We will miss her next year.” She is in the Honor Society, the youth Entrepreneur Club and the Operation Smile Club at Cape. In her spare time, she loves going to the beach and hanging with her friends living the "slower lower life." Lo will attend the University of Delaware, where she will major in global enterprise management.
