Athletes of the Week Oct. 17

October 17, 2025
Jason Baker

This senior on the Cape cross country team opened up the season with a 52-second victory at the Lake Forest Invitational. He followed that by setting a course record of 15:32 at Brecknock Park. The senior followed that in dramatic fashion by grinding out a win in the pouring rain at Sandhill Fields against Saint Mark's Sept. 16. While he bested the field by nearly a minute in the first two Delaware races, the third was won by less than a second against the Spartans. He then breezed to victory in a tri-meet against Smyrna and Polytech. Proving he has that dog in him, Jason won the Carlisle Invitational when his 15:19 edged out the second- and third-place finishers from State College, Pa. In his last outing at Lehigh University's Paul Short Run, he finished in fifth place, crossing the finish line in 15:21.

Norah Block

A broad-shouldered forward on the Cape field hockey team, Norah plays like a track girl running hurdles. Next fall, Norah is heading to the Haverford School, which has an acceptance rate under 10%. She is obviously the academic/athletic package, joining one of the better teams in all of Division III field hockey – the Fords are currently ranked 19th with a record of 12-1. Haverford plays in the Centennial Conference. Norah scored the first goal of the game in the third quarter of the 2-0 Cape win at Sussex Academy Oct. 7. Seniors Norah and Alysa McCarthy have been bookend forwards, running in and out of the game for a never-slow-down Cape offense. Both will hurt a defense when least expected. Coach Kate Austin: “Norah has embraced our philosophy of forwards playing solid defense to wear teams down. She’s taken on a leadership role with the large group of forwards we have and is always providing encouragement to her teammates at practices and during games.”

Alysa McCarthy

Alysa is part of Cape’s combo package on attack. There are no set starters, as she is part of Cape’s offensive depth profile. “It’s been a long time since we’ve had that kind of depth on attack,” said Cape assistant coach Debbie Windett. Alysa has been rocking and rolling along the Cape forward line the last two seasons. She and Norah Block are bookend power players who are always ready to mix it up and are dangerous in unsettled situations. Alysa had the first goal of the game on Senior Night in Cape’s 3-0 win over once-beaten Newark Charter. It was just her fourth goal on the season, but Alysa is a dangerous player in the biggest moments. Coach Austin: “Alysa had a great game against Newark Charter and opened our scoring. She’s crafty in the circle, and her skills under pressure were really tight Tuesday. She’s brought into the dynamic movement we want to see from forwards.”

Julian Puente

A freshman on the Cape unified football team, this wide receiver recently broke the school reception record with seven catches against Mt. Pleasant. He also scored a touchdown against Woodbridge and two touchdowns against Indian River. On the defensive side, he is a quick DB who can pull a flag from the speediest opponent. He’s also made four interceptions this season. "Julian is awesome," said Cape head coach Drew Messick. "He plays really hard and always leaves everything on the field. He gives a 100% effort for the team." Julian loves playing for the Vikings and will be playing basketball after the football season. "Julian has a great attitude," said assistant coach Theresa McCloy. "He is such a pleasure to coach." In his spare time, Julian loves to play video games, especially Fortnite.
