Bad Hair Day expands into new home

Rehoboth salon moves to newly renovated building across Lake Avenue.
June 4, 2015

Last year at this time, Bad Hair Day owner Drexel Davison said he was in a bind; he knew he needed to grow his upscale hair salon and skin care center to remain competitive and true to his vision, but resources and space in his location at 45 Lake Ave. in Rehoboth Beach were maxed out.

Frustrated by his lack of options and the probable expense of finding, building or buying a new facility for his salon and spa, Davison recalls he almost didn't notice the solution to his predicament was literally right in front of his eyes.

An aging yellow bed-and-breakfast, Cabana Gardens, hadn't gotten a second glance from serious buyers for nearly two years, despite a prime location, directly across the street from Bad Hair Day's longtime location.

When a distraught Davison reached out to his immediate family in Dover, who own and operate Kent Construction, he received the same kind of encouragement and backing that had enabled him to open the salon more than 20 years ago on Wilmington Avenue.

With the support of his family, Davison found himself in a position to buy the dilapidated property, but making the structure align with his vision was a big order to fill over the cold winter.

The salon owner said his call for help was met by the full support and resources of Kent Construction, and by mid-spring, the winter-long reclamation and renovation of the building was complete.

Watching renovations of the dilapidated Cabana Gardens - code named 'Big Bird' during building - spurred anticipation for a new home, Davison said, but being able to remain open and mostly unaffected during renovations on the new building meant the transition was virtually seamless.

While management guarantees there will be more to come at the new salon, now located at 20 Lake Ave., stylists are already hard at work in the hair salon and barber shop while technicians and clients are raving about the comfortable new accommodations.

"I like that there is so much natural light, and everything moves and adjusts," Rehoboth resident Diane Boc said from the comfort of her massage chair overlooking Lake Gerar during a pedicure. "I sat down in them and even the technicians' chairs are comfortable."

With large, open entryways, wheelchair-accessible spa rooms on the first floor, a barber shop, porches and patios, the new location offers a chance to relax indoors or out with views of Cranberry Park and summer life in Rehoboth Beach.

Davison said his vision of a seaside salon and spa comes to fruition after more than two decades and four moves, and family members, who continue to operate the company Drexel's father, Ernest Davison, founded more than 40 years ago, have supported his endeavors from the beginning.

"This building is a monument to the love and support of family," Davison said. "My family that made it happen - my parents and siblings - the Bad Hair Day staff and family of professionals, and then our clients who are family to us."
