From bad to (the) worst!
It is All-Star break time for major-league baseball and the Phillies only have 29 wins on the season so far. If they're not careful they could challenge the 1962 New York Mets as the worst team ever!
I sincerely hope the Phillies will finally trade Jonathan Papelbon to a contending team so us Phillies fan's don't have to hear him complain any more. I think the Phillies will start to call up their promising young players from the minor leagues soon, including Aaron Nola who is a very promising pitcher. With some new faces we might even get to enjoy watching a few games as the season winds down this fall.
Let's talk about some good sport's efforts from this past week. Wimbledon was very entertaining this year. Novak Djokovic won his third Wimbledon Tennis championship on Sunday in a very interesting match over Roger Federer. I was really hoping it would go to 5 sets. I was cheering for Federer to win because of his age. You never know when his last chance will be to win his 18th Grand Slam major title.
Federer's momentum after winning the second set in a very long tiebreaker seemed to break after a very short rain delay in the third set. Djokovic was truly the favorite in the match because of how well he has played the last two years. They both gave outstanding performances.
On the women's side, Serena Williams won her 21st Grand Slam title and her sixth Wimbledon title and now she has the almost unprecedented chance to win the calendar year Grand Slam at the U.S. Open in August/September. This would match Steffi Graf's outstanding record. The world anxiously awaits that tournament to see what happens.
And of course, you all know I am filling my time this week with watching one of the best golf events of the season. The British Open is being played this week at the true home of golf, the old course at St. Andrews. This is located on the northeast coast of Scotland, on St Andrews Bay. They have been playing golf there for at least 400 years!
Dustin Johnson leads the field after the first round with a 7 under par 65. Jordan Spieth has a good chance to be in contention to win his third straight major after a first round 67. We shall see. The scores would probably be pretty low if it weren't for the ever changing weather and you can count on that!
Rain and wind are in the forecast so it will prove to offer the challenge viewers are hoping for. And even if you are not a huge golf fan, you should watch just to see the uniqueness of the setting. This course is built right into the surrounding town. It might not be grand, but it's spectacular in its own right.
