Baker’s Exxon outside Lewes is set to close in early October for a six-month renovation.

In an interview Sept. 22, Mark Baker said it’s a major demolition and rebuild project. He said when construction is complete, the business will still sell Exxon brand gas, but also feature food made fresh daily through the Country Corner Market.

The Lewes store will be just like the company’s stores in Georgetown and Milford, said Baker, a third-generation Baker working for the Georgetown-based company started in 1951 by Wilson Baker.

It’s been decades since the site has been updated. Baker said he couldn’t remember exactly how long the family has owned a gas station at that location, but he said the last major renovation was in 1995.

“It’s due for a major refresh,” said Baker. “We’re really excited.”

Baker said the family-owned and -operated business has been around for a long time and doesn’t plan on leaving anytime soon.

“We wouldn’t want anyone to think we weren’t coming back. We’ll be back, new and improved,” said Baker.

Baker’s Exxon in Lewes is located at 17921 Coastal Highway, on the northbound side, at the intersection with Wescoats Road. For more information, call 302-645-6713.
