Bayhealth welcomes new pharmacy residents
Bayhealth announced its newest cohort of pharmacy residents, continuing a tradition of excellence in clinical training, community health and interdisciplinary collaboration. These residents play a vital role in delivering high-quality, patient-centered care while developing the clinical skills needed for successful careers in pharmacy.
This year’s pharmacy residency class consists of Chisom Achinivu, PharmD, acute care; Peaches Brown, PharmD, ambulatory care settings; and Ayona Shelton, PharmD, acute care.
“These residents are not only developing their clinical expertise, but they are also contributing meaningfully to Bayhealth’s mission to strengthen the health of our community,” said Celeste Williams, PharmD, BCPS, Bayhealth Pharmacy Residency program coordinator and PGY1 program director (acute care). “Through patient care, education and community engagement, they’re helping improve outcomes in both the hospital and outpatient settings.”
Bayhealth’s Pharmacy Residency program provides comprehensive training across a wide range of disciplines. Residents participate in patient care, medication management, interdisciplinary rounds and community health events, all while serving as resources for drug information and education.
“Residents can expect hands-on opportunities to educate medical residents, pharmacy students and other healthcare professionals,” said Williams. “This experience strengthens their communication skills while expanding access to reliable medication guidance within the care team.”
Since its inception in 2003, Bayhealth’s PGY1 Acute Care Residency Program has continued to grow, expanding its clinical experiences to include areas like pain management, family medicine and population health. Most notably, Bayhealth recently introduced a PGY1 program in ambulatory care settings residency, which offers early specialization without the need for a second-year program, a unique offering among pharmacy residencies.
“This addition gives residents early exposure to outpatient specialties like anticoagulation, oncology and population health,” said Williams. “It prepares them to pursue ambulatory care roles directly after graduation or explore academic and clinical paths without the extra training year required at many institutions.”
Throughout the program, pharmacy residents are guided by a dedicated network of mentors including program directors, preceptors and pharmacy leadership. This supportive structure helps build the residents’ clinical confidence, and fosters personal and professional development.
“Our residents receive consistent mentorship from experienced pharmacists, leadership and educators throughout the year,” said Williams. “We’re committed to helping them grow into confident, capable clinicians who can lead and innovate in any setting.”
To provide exceptional interdisciplinary teaching opportunities, Bayhealth Pharmacy Residency also partners with Bayhealth Graduate Medical Education and Bayhealth Medical Group. While mentoring students and leading educational initiatives, residents also earn a teaching certificate through the Washington Metropolitan Society of Health-System Pharmacists program.
Past residents have made a measurable difference at Bayhealth, from leading quality improvement projects to contributing to policy changes. Many have chosen to continue their careers within the organization — currently, five former residents are employed on Bayhealth’s pharmacy team.
“Our past residents have implemented changes that improved medication safety and enhanced patient care,” said Williams. “They’ve left their mark, and we’re excited to see how this year’s class will carry that momentum forward.”
