Beacon and Mariner students earn all-state band recognitions

Three Cape district students are among only six middle schoolers selected to this year’s Junior All-State Concert Band in Sussex County. Cape students selected were Victoria Vincent, Jase Truitt and Conor Wiedmann, all from Beacon Middle School.

Sara Dawson, an eighth-grade student from Mariner Middle School, was selected for the All-State Jazz Band as a first chair bass guitar player, a rare honor for a middle school student to achieve. The All-State Jazz group is predominantly made up of high school students in 10th to 12th grades.

Students who auditioned were tasked with preparing a solo and were judged on scales, sight-reading ability and the solo piece they performed for the judges.

All students selected will practice together in the upcoming weeks, and performances will take place in March.
