January 31, 2012

The Beacon Middle School girls' basketball Vikings went into an epic battle with the Spartans on the home synthetic court and when the final buzzer sounded, the Spartans took home a one-point 34-33 win.
Starting out slow against a much bigger Chipman team, the Vikings trailed 3-10 after the first quarter.  Realizing that they had the skills and talent to hang with the Spartans, they only trailed 17-15 at the half.
"We know we have a good team," said Beacon forward Allison Palmer.
The Lady Vikes broke the Spartan press and finished the third quarter up 27-24. Beacon moved ahead by one point at 33-32 with six seconds left on the clock when  scramble occurred; the Spartans came out of the pile with the ball, took it the length of the court and hit a lay-up with two ticks left on the clock.
"We've been working real hard on passing and breaking the press and it worked today. We just came up a little short," said Palmer.
"We passed the ball and boxed out really well today," said forward Liz Frederick. "Our offense moved the ball around faster and our passes were on today."
Palmer led the Beacon scorers with 10 while Tess Bernheimer and Tyra Yeates each scored seven. Riley Shields and Sydney Pedersen added three and two points, respectively.
The Beacon boys fared better as they downed the Spartans 58-23 in an awesome offensive display by the Vikes.
Brandt Lookup led all Vikings scorers with 14 while Jack Ashby tallied 11. Izaiah Dadzie scored six, Drew Mulcahy and Alec Hochrien each had five, Mike Williams and Chris Chiartas tallied four while J.R. Yeates, Ian Robertson, Brent Reed, and Zack Gelof each had a basket. Trevor Daisey hit a free throw for one point.
