Beacon girls’ lax rolls over Mariner 18-6

Game showcases depth of talent heading toward Cape
May 9, 2023

Beacon girls’ lacrosse is bad news in a good way. The 2023 team, under coaches Lynn Richardson and Sam Purple, is stacked with a healthy quantity of quality players.

Sister school Mariner is a burgeoning program with an array of talented players in the pipeline, many of them just in sixth grade.

The sister schools met on the pitch of Champions Stadium May 8, with Beacon clad in gold jerseys with blue trim, and Mariner in white with blue and gold trim.

“Just so much talent on the field for the game that always attracts so many fans,” said Cape varsity coach Lindsay Underwood. “It’s exciting to think most of the players will merge into Cape and become teammates over four years of high school.”

Beacon jumped out to a 12-2 halftime lead en route to an 18-6 victory. Beacon dominated the draw, then shared the ball. Ten of the 18 goals came on assists, led by Mairead Rishko with three.

Beacon eighth-graders scoring goals include Haley Gamuciello with four, Sophia Anemone, Amara Fruchtman, Atia Sabbagh and Ally Diehl each with two, and Rishko with one. The seventh-grade class was paced by Alexis Zolper with two goals, and single goals from Ella Levy and Mikaela Gordon. Hazel Mancari, a sixth-grader, scored one goal.

Mariner goal scorers were eighth-grader Emily Wells with four and sixth-grader Meredith Frederick with two. Captain Blair Chubb, a seventh-grader, contributed an assist.

Notes: Sixth-grader Claire Hassell is the Beacon goalie. Beacon is 7-0 with a remaining home game versus Caravel Wednesday, May 10. Jayla Persia, an eighth-grader, is Mariner’s starting goalie. Mariner, coached by Megan Burns and Dana Plummer, is 6-2 on the season and has a remaining home game Tuesday, May 9, versus 7-2 Worcester Prep.
