May 3, 2019

The Beacon girls track & field team capped off another undefeated season May 1 by winning a quad meet to finish with a 14-0 record on the season. Beacon beat Dover 77-32, Chipman 82-27 and Mariner 91-18, and won eight of the 13 events for the day.

Jania Currie led the way, winning the 400 meters in 1:10.0, and the high jump in 4-feet-8-inches; she also ran on the winning 4-by-200 relay with teammates Janie Burkley, Lindsey D’Ambrogi and Montana Jones.

Kacie Gibbons closed out her middle school dual-meet career by winning the 55-meter hurdles in 9.3 and returning to capture the triple jump in 28-8. Gibbons also led off the second-place 4-by-100 relay team. Arrianna Adili-Khams was second in the 1,600 meters in 6:18 and returned to win the 800 meters in 2:48.8. Anna Bender won the long jump in 14-2, while Haley Archambault won the discus in 68-9.

The Beacon boys’ track team went 2-1, losing to Dover by only three points. The boys finished the season with a 10-4 record. Eighth-grade distance runner Liam O’Donnell won the 1,600 meters in 5:10.4, while seventh-grade teammate Justin Friscia was second in a huge season best of 5:12.6. Friscia doubled back to win the 800 meters in 2:17.9, while the 4-by-200 relay of Tashawn Callaway, James Webster, O’Donnell and DeShawn Lewis won in a time of 1:46.2. Lewis also captured the high jump in 5-0.

Mariner standouts

Just a sixth-grader, Ally Stevenson has put together an impressive season in the distance races, as the talented runner ran 6:04.8 for a season best at 1,600 meters. Stevenson is hoping for a sub-six mile at the Delaware Middle School Classic Friday, May 5.

Leading the Mariner boys was Trey Leggins in the 400 meters. He’s one of the finest middle school long sprinters in the state. Leggins broke the 60-second barrier with a time of 59.8. The boys’ 400 meters may have been the most exciting race of the day, as Leggins held off Beacon sprinters TaShawn Callaway in 1:00.2 and DeShaun Lewis in 1:00.8.

Oy Vey 5K

Truck driver Enos Benbow, 37, out of Georgetown captured the overall championship at the Oy Vey 5K in 18:14, with Steven Eshelman of Lincoln second in 18:54. Beau Croll of Lewes was third in 20:22.
