Beacon Middle School art students who won awards in Rehoboth Art League’s Young at Art exhibition received special recognition from their school April 14.

Teachers from each participating school could submit 10 pieces of art, Beacon Middle art teacher Alexander Louvis said, and among the 10 Beacon entries, five students received awards.

Each of the award-winning students received a $150 cash prize, Louvis said. Madeline Cordrey, Macie Bowen, Ariel King and Mei-Li Troise received the Picasso-O’Keefe awards, and Rania Khan earned the Award of Excellence.

Madeline also received the Derrickson scholarship award, earning her a year of free classes at the Rehoboth Art League. She used colored pencils to draw a close-up of a cow for the competition, and said she most enjoys drawing people and Disney characters.

Rania said she wanted to draw something intricate, so she used a mechanical pencil to create a detailed alligator. She said she loves to draw everyday objects, and in particular, animals and intricate subjects.

In addition to Beacon Middle, students from Delmarva Christian K-8, Delmarva Christian High, East Millsboro Elementary, H.O. Brittingham Elementary, Love Creek Elementary, Milford Central Academy, Millsboro Middle and Shields Elementary entered this year’s Young at Art contest.
