Beacon students engage in community service projects

June 30, 2025

Seventh-grade students and members of the National Junior Honor Society at Beacon Middle School recently spent a day giving back to the local community through hands-on service projects designed to cultivate leadership, responsibility and civic engagement.

Four groups of students represented Beacon and the Cape district at sites in Cape Henlopen State Park, the City of Rehoboth Beach, the Beacon Middle School campus and the Artpothecary/Artist Rising youth program at West Side Creative Market in Rehoboth Beach.

At the state park, students took part in a beach cleanup, met with park employees, and learned about the local ecosystem, especially how to maintain a balance between environmental preservation and community development.

At the Creative Market, students helped by doing furniture maintenance, performing gardening tasks, picking up litter and helping tidy up the main building, enhancing the space for local artists and visitors.

Instead of heading off campus, the NJHS students stayed at Beacon Middle School and dedicated their time and energy to a full day of community service. With determination and teamwork, they tackled a wide range of projects including cleaning up school grounds, organizing the building, restoring the sports shed, removing old sports fencing, gardening and picking up litter across campus.

The group serving the City of Rehoboth Beach met Mayor Stan Mills, toured the convention center and Rehoboth museum, cleaned the beach and boardwalk, chalked “thank you” notes at the fire department, and planted loblolly pines in Central Park to help preserve local beauty.

“This special day was more than just a field trip,” said Dr. Kathleen Sheehan, Beacon principal. “It was an opportunity for our students to take pride in meaningful work, connect what they learn in school to real-life impact, and show just how powerful young people can be when they come together to serve.”
