In the new year, Beebe Healthcare will continue offering health education opportunities for community members to learn and take an active role in improving their health and wellness. Offerings include the National Diabetes Prevention Program and Healthy Living with Chronic Conditions.
The year-long diabetes prevention program provides guidance and support for people diagnosed with pre-diabetes, previously diagnosed with gestational diabetes or identified as at high risk for diabetes.
Participants meet weekly for four months and will then transition to a maintenance plan for the duration of the program. Meetings will take place at the Selbyville Public Library. The first session will be 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 28, at 11 W. McCabe St., Selbyville.
Individuals must be age 18 or older and have a body mass index of 25 or higher (23 or higher for the Asian American population) and have not been previously diagnosed with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes or end-stage renal disease.
The program aims to teach people how to eat healthier, add physical activity to their daily routines, manage stress and stay motivated to improve their health.

Healthy Living with Chronic Conditions is a six-week program designed to help adults who are living with a chronic health issue or who want to prevent the development of chronic conditions. Attendees will be encouraged to share their experiences and challenges, and help one another solve problems as they work together to improve their health, and live happy and fulfilling lives despite their medical issues.
Meetings will take place at the at the Ocean View CHEER Center. The first session will be from 12 to 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 4, at 30637 Cedar Road, Ocean View.
Key topics for discussion will include techniques for managing frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation; the benefits of exercise and ways to maintain and improve strength, flexibility and endurance; medication management; effective communication; and decision-making and problem-solving strategies.
Classes are open to adults of all ages and abilities. This program is offered by Beebe Healthcare in partnership with the Delaware Division of Public Health.
