Beebe Healthcare will host a public open house with scheduled tours of its specialty surgical hospital on the Rehoboth health campus from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, March 19, and 10 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., Sunday, March 20.
Attendees will experience a behind-the-scenes look at Beebe’s innovative specialty surgical hospital before it begins transforming surgical care in Sussex County in May. Community members will be able to tour the facility’s four floors that feature operating rooms, pre- and post-op bays, private patient rooms, imaging equipment, physical therapy space and much more.
“For years, Beebe has taken steps to ensure that quality and safe healthcare is available to the people of Sussex County for the present and future,” said Dr. David A. Tam, Beebe Healthcare president and CEO. “The specialty surgical hospital on Beebe’s Rehoboth health campus symbolizes the rapid evolution in healthcare. Medical technology and care protocols make it possible for patients to receive safe, innovative care with shorter inpatient stays or even as an outpatient procedure. As Sussex County grows, so does Beebe. This investment is our commitment to you.”
The specialty surgical hospital is packed with the latest innovations and technologies to streamline operative care for patients with a wide range of medical needs, from bariatric and breast procedures to orthopaedic surgeries.
“Surgeons will perform simple to sophisticated procedures, leveraging robotic surgical systems as well as minimally invasive and navigation-based tools to optimize the process of surgical care for each and every patient treated,” said James Spellman, MD, FACS, FSSO, Beebe Healthcare chief of surgery. “This means shorter stays and faster recovery times so patients can get back to their optimal level of health.”
While this surgical hospital is packed with the latest innovations and technology, the multidisciplinary team building and designing the facility put an emphasis on prioritizing the patient experience.
“Patients and their families come into an amenity-packed space that is warm and welcoming, and adorned with soothing color palettes and artwork,” said Mark Loukides, vice president of facilities and environment of care. “Many of these decisions were made with support and guidance from Beebe’s Patient Family Advisory Council, whose perspective based on their own past patient experience is greatly valued.”
Community support of the surgical hospital has been unmatched since Beebe’s largest expansion plan was unveiled in 2017. The work of Beebe Medical Foundation was critical as the specialty surgical hospital was built, with construction costs requiring an investment of over $100 million.
“We are so grateful to be opening yet another facility despite the many challenges of a pandemic, and our thanks to the strong and loyal philanthropic support of Sussex County community is unending,” said Tom Protack, Beebe Medical Foundation president. “Fundraising to support this new facility has been and will be essential long term as we continue to meet the needs of our fast-growing community. Beebe continues to expand programs, services and its medical staff. We are investing in future technologies and continuing to focus on the enhanced experience for Sussex County. Today is a day to truly celebrate our rich and committed history of 106 years.”
Safety measures will be in effect to protect community members during this stage of the COVID-19 pandemic. Masks will be required indoors and recommended outside. Tour reservations are limited and required. A virtual tour video will be available.
“We are so excited to welcome our friends, team members, neighbors, and family to the specialty surgical hospital,” said Regina Newell, MSN, RN, ONC, director of the specialty surgical hospital. “We had hoped to give a tour to everyone in Sussex County, but must keep the health of our community in mind as the pandemic continues. Tour space will be limited, so register quickly and come tour one of the most beautiful buildings in Delaware.”
