Big Oyster brings it at Blood for a Brew

Big Oyster Brewery booked more than 30 donors again for its Blood for a Brew event held with the Blood Bank of Delmarva July 26.

The brewery’s second blood bank event booked 31 appointments, and its June 21 event filled all 35 appointment slots.

Among those who donated this time was Scott Garner, an operations manager for Fins Hospitality Group, who said Big Oyster pushed the blood drives on social media. 

“Only 3% of the population gives. If we can help get the word out, people can come here, give blood and have a pint as well,” Garner said.

Garner was referring to statistics provided by America’s Blood Centers that show only 3% of the U.S. population donates blood. Yet, someone needs blood every two seconds.

Donor receipts include the reminder to avoid alcoholic beverages until after a meal and a nonalcoholic beverage.

All 19 hospitals in Delmarva rely on Blood Bank of Delmarva to supply the blood products they need for patients.
