Blue Hen Baseball Camp is a hit in Lewes

July 2, 2025

The Blue Hen Youth Baseball Camp made its fourth annual visit to the Lewes Little League complex June 23-26, giving more than 40 young players an opportunity to learn skills that could make them a future Major League Baseball star.

Camp Director D.J. Long, who played for the University of Delaware and is head coach at Sussex Central, gathered a group of knowledgeable assistants to instruct the finer points of America’s pasttime. Instructors working the camp are JJ Killen (Wilmington University), Jesse Long (Wilmington University), Chase Fleming (Wilmington University), Andrew Callway (University of Delaware), Jace Jarmon (Bloomsburg University), Osiah Kelley (University of Maryland), Garret Quinn (Wilmington University) and Shawn Edevane (Wilmington University).

“The Blue Hen Baseball Camp is a great opportunity for young kids to learn from college players and have fun with their friends,” said Long. “Our camp has players go through stations to work on their skills in the infield, outfield, pitching and hitting.”

Each afternoon featured scrimmages where the players competed against other players their age.

The last day of the camp featured a home run derby, and hardest throwing, most accurate thrower, fastest runner and hardest hitter off the tee competitions.

“This camp featured local kids along with several out-of-state players that were in the area for vacation,” Long said. “Hopefully each of them leave camp taking away little things to help elevate their game in the future.”
