Botanic gardens to host Great Monarch Migration class Sept. 22

September 19, 2022

Delaware Botanic Gardens at Pepper Creek will host a Great Monarch Migration class at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 22.

Leading the session will be DBG butterfly expert Margaret Kimmel and Director of Horticulture Stephen Pryce Lea.

Participants will discover the fantastic journey of the endangered East Coast butterflies as they make their way to the winter hibernation grounds in the Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico, and learn about the native plants they depend on. They will learn about the difficult path that only the Methuselah Monarch makes each year to ensure its survival.

“Margaret Kimmel is a science teacher and one of our most experienced naturalist volunteers, with a wealth of knowledge on the life cycle of butterflies,” said Lea.

”Supporting the monarch butterfly is more important than ever as they pass through the Mid-Atlantic region on their journey south. Join us to explore why butterfly gardening is about more than just planting milkweed,” said Kimmel.

Class fee is $10 per per person, plus the DBG admission fee of $15 for nonmembers. Admission is free for DBG members. The gardens are at 30220 Piney Neck Road, Dagsboro.
