Boysie Lowery Living Jazz Residency recital set July 31

July 22, 2021

Nassau Valley Vineyards will host the Boysie Lowery Living Jazz Residency Program recital from 7 to 9 p.m., Saturday July, 31, outside in Bacchus Grove. There is rain contingency to move inside if needed. Attendees should bring their own lawn chairs. No coolers and no pets will be permitted.

The concert is free to the public with an encouraged donation to be split between True Blue Jazz Kids – Youth Jazz Initiative and the Boysie Lowery program.

The Boysie Lowery Living Jazz Residency Program is a two-week performance and composition project for the next generation of jazz composers, ages 18-25, who, with their talent and passion, are keeping jazz alive. The Boysie Lowery Living Jazz Residency continues to attract gifted jazz musicians from all over North America. It accepts 11-15 students per year. Featured this year are 15 polished jazz musicians.

The program is named after legendary educator Robert “Boysie” Lowery, who can claim jazz greats like Ernie Watts, Gerald Chavis, Marcus Belgrave and Clifford Brown as his students. Jonathan Whitney, program director for the Boysie Lowery Living Jazz Residency, pairs emerging jazz musicians with a wonderful group of seasoned faculty that has included he likes of Warren Wolf, Aaron Diehl, Aaron Parks and Ari Hoenig.

“As an educator, it is amazing to watch the residents grow and see how strong they are already at such a young age. As a musician, the two-week residency gives me the opportunity to hear what is going through the minds musically and creatively of the next generation of jazz artists. The music is in good hands,” said Jonathan Whitney, program chair.

The annual performance returns to the Cape Region after a brief hiatus. The concert used to be held at All Saints’ Church in Rehoboth Beach, hosted by former rector Father Max Wolfe. The Nassau Valley Vineyards team is delighted to pick up a wonderful musical legacy.

There will be food and drinks including wine, beer, sangria, water and sodas available for purchase. Nassau Valley Vineyards is located at 32165 Winery Way in Lewes.
